Book-to-film adaptations coming soon sit in one of three states, and only one of them is close to a promise. An adaptation is dated when a studio has booked a release day and begun spending against it; in production when it is financed and shooting but carries no day; and optioned when someone has paid an author for the right to try, which is the state most books stay in permanently. This page keeps the three apart, because a list that mixes them is the reason readers spend years waiting for films that were never made.
The three states a coming adaptation can be in
The three states are separated by money, and the amount rises sharply at each step. An option costs a studio comparatively little and buys a fixed window, commonly 12 or 18 months, in which it may develop a script; if nothing happens, the right returns to the author and can be sold again. Production means the money is spent and the footage exists, which makes abandonment expensive but not impossible. A date means a distributor has taken a slot in the release calendar against competing films, and at that point the incentive to move flips: moving now costs more than releasing.
The middle state is the one a list can least often show, because it is the shortest lived: a film that is shooting usually takes a date before it finishes. HBO's Harry Potter series spent about a year in it, with principal photography running at Leavesden from July 2025 while the premiere was still described only as a 2027 window, and it acquired an actual day once shooting was well advanced. Emily Henry's Beach Read did the reverse, taking a 2027 date before the cameras turned in Toronto in June 2026. Both were financed and in production. Only one of them was, at that point, a promise about a day.
Reading an announcement correctly means asking which of the three it reports. Trade coverage in Deadline, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter usually says, in the body if not the headline, whether a book has been optioned, whether a writer is attached, or whether a start date exists. The Bookseller and Publishers Marketplace report the same deals from the publishing side, often earlier and with the rights position stated more plainly.
What is dated for the rest of 2026
Dated for the remainder of 2026 are 3 features with major studio slots, all drawn from novels with very large existing readerships. Lionsgate dated The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, from Suzanne Collins's 2025 prequel novel, for 20 November 2026. Warner Bros dated the third Denis Villeneuve Dune film, drawn from Frank Herbert's Dune Messiah of 1969, for 18 December 2026. Amazon MGM dated Verity, from Colleen Hoover's 2018 novel, for 2 October 2026, having moved it off an earlier May slot. The largest remaining date of the year is not a film at all: HBO's Harry Potter series, adapted from J. K. Rowling's seven novels, was long spoken of as a 2027 title and is now set for 25 December 2026. That it is television matters, because a series has room for interiority that a 2 hour feature does not. The earlier part of the year carried its own dated run, including Emerald Fennell's version of Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights in February, Project Hail Mary from Andy Weir's 2021 novel in March, and Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, taken from Homer rather than from a novel, in July.
Herbert published Dune in 1965 and Dune Messiah in 1969. The second book is short, political and deliberately anticlimactic: it exists to argue against the first book's hero.
The screen version arrives 57 years later as the third instalment of a franchise, which is the opposite commercial position to the one the novel was written from.
What is announced for 2027 and beyond
Announcements for 2027 are thinner than announcements for 2026, and thinner still the further out you look, which is normal rather than a sign that the pipeline is empty. Warner Bros has dated a Lord of the Rings feature, The Hunt for Gollum, for December 2027, having moved it off an earlier 2026 slot. 20th Century Studios has dated Beach Read, from Emily Henry's 2020 novel, for 7 May 2027, and it went before the cameras in Toronto in June 2026.
Everything else attached to 2027 in circulation is at option or development stage. The romance catalogues are the clearest case, because the states are mixed there more freely than anywhere else. Colleen Hoover's Verity and Emily Henry's Beach Read are dated, as set out above. Henry's Book Lovers is not: it was announced in 2023, with Sarah Heyward writing the script, and it still carries no director and no cast, which is what an option looks like after 3 years. The 2 positions turn up in the same column constantly, and they are not the same object.
Why a dated adaptation moves
Dated adaptations move for 4 recurring reasons, and only the first is about the film itself. Post-production overruns push a date when effects work or an editing problem outlasts the schedule. Calendar collision pushes a date when a larger release takes the same weekend. Industrial stoppages push whole slates at once, as the 2023 writers' and actors' strikes did across 2024 and 2025. Distributor strategy pushes a date when a studio decides a title performs better in a different season, which is why literary adaptations cluster in the autumn awards corridor and young-adult adaptations cluster around school holidays.
None of these reasons tells you anything about how far the film will travel from the book. A delayed adaptation is not a compromised one, and a punctual adaptation is not a faithful one.
How to check whether a book you have just finished is being filmed
Check 4 sources in order, from most reliable to least. Start with the author's own site or newsletter, where rights news is usually posted and is rarely wrong. Move to the trade press for the deal itself, which will name the studio and usually the state of the rights. Check the distributor's published release calendar for a date, since a studio's own calendar is the only place a date is authoritative. Finish with a film database, treating unsourced future entries with suspicion, because they are frequently populated from announcements that have since lapsed.
What the wait is actually for
The wait is for a screenplay that solves the book's specific problem, and that is why gaps of 5 or 6 years between publication and release are ordinary rather than a sign of trouble. Colson Whitehead's The Nickel Boys appeared in 2019 and reached cinemas in 2024. David Grann's Killers of the Flower Moon appeared in 2017 and reached cinemas in 2023. Thomas Savage published The Power of the Dog in 1967 and waited 54 years. The books that cross quickly are usually the ones whose structure is already close to a film's, and the books that take decades are usually the ones where somebody had to work out what the camera was going to do instead of the prose.
